Logroño is a city in northern Spain, on the Ebro River. It is the capital of the autonomous community of La Rioja, formerly known as Logroño Province.
The population of Logroño in 2004 was 142,143. The city is a centre of the trade in Rioja wine, for which the area is noted, and also produces wood, metal, and textile products.
From the 10th century, possession of Logroño was disputed between the kings of Navarre and those of Castile; the region was finally annexed to Castile in 1173. Alfonso VI of Castile granted Logroño a charter of rights that served as a model for other Spanish cities.
Logroño is home to football club CD Logroñés.

Recreation (Plazas and Parks)
- Paseo del Príncipe de Vergara (El Espolón): Located in the financial center of the capital and positioned in the center by the statue of General Espartero. Here one can find the office of Information and Tourism and the famous "Shell of Espolón," the setting of numerous acts relgious acts including some during the Festival of St. Mateo.
- Town Square: Located on the Avenue of Peace, the modern Town Hall of Logroño is in a large plaza where in years past it has seens numerous public acts, festivals, expositions, concerts, and in the last few years, during Christmas, a life size reconstruction of the nativity scene.
- Carmen Park: Located near the bus station, this park is one of the most beautiful of the city with its variety of flora and fauna including several ducks and birds.
- Plaza del Mercado: Located somewhere near Calle Portales, one of the most famous avenues of the city, at the foot of the Round Cathedral. This is where the nightly festivals of Logroño occur, near Calle Mayor.
- Parque del Ebro: Located near the Ebro, an extensive park full of vegetation ideal for relaxing. Also has a bike path traversing through the park.
- Parque de la Ribera: Next to Parque del Ebro, recently constructed. Here many gardens are found alongside the Plaza de Toros de la Ribera). Also: Riojaforum

Social Life
Calle del Laurel, known as "the path of the elephants" and Calle San Juan are typical streets where various restaurants and foodstuffs can be found. Calle Marqués de San Nicolás and Calle Mayor are the main areas where the young guns and the not-so-young-guns spend weekend nights.Sports
El máximo exponente del deporte Logroñés es el Club Balonmano Ciudad de Logroño. Bajo la denominación Darien Logroño, compite en la categoría de plata del balonmano nacional: División de Honor B. [CB Ciudad de Logroño].
Club Deportivo Logroñés represents the city in soccer. The team was founded in 1940 que llegó a jugar en primera división durante nueve temporadas. Es el equipo que más afición atrae a Las Gaunas por encima del Logroñés Club de Fútbol (fundado en el año 2000 como Club Deportivo Recreación) que actualmente está una categoría más arriba aunque sin apenas afición.
Festivals and Traditions
The patron saint of Logroño is Santa María de la Esperanza.The most important festivals are:
- San Bernabé, celebrated on June 11, commemorating the victory and resistance of Logroño against French invaders under Francisco I that sieged the city in May and June of 1521. During this celebration, fried fish (trout) is typically served, along with bread and wine-said to be the food of Logroño during the French invasion.
- San Mateo, celebrated between September 20 and September 26, son las fiestas de la vendimia riojana. Los actos principales son la Pisada de la Uva y la ofrenda del primer mosto a la Virgen de Valvanera. También se realizan corridas de toros, degustaciones... Son unas de las mejores fiestas del Norte de España, iniciadas con el pregón del alcalde en la plaza del ayuntamiento y el ya popular "chupinazo" (el lanzamiento del cohete iniciador de las fiestas) donde se ha puesto de moda la "guerra" de lanzamiento de todo tipo de alimentos como huevos, cava, harina, mostaza, tomates, etc. Es típico ese primer día de fiestas ir de la plaza del ayuntamiento a la calle Mayor (zona más importante de pubs y bares de copas de Logroño) parando en los balcones y pidiendo a los inquilinos el lanzamiento de cubos de agua. Como en toda fiesta riojana que se precie, el vino y el zurracapote (bebida tradicional riojana) recorre las calles en busca de gente que aprecie su buen sabor...y claro, lo que después acarrea.
