Logroño

Logroño is a city in northern Spain, on the Ebro River. It is the capital of the autonomous community of La Rioja, formerly known as Logroño Province.

The population of Logroño in 2004 was 142,143. The city is a centre of the trade in Rioja wine, for which the area is noted, and also produces wood, metal, and textile products.

From the 10th century, possession of Logroño was disputed between the kings of Navarre and those of Castile; the region was finally annexed to Castile in 1173. Alfonso VI of Castile granted Logroño a charter of rights that served as a model for other Spanish cities.

Logroño is home to football club CD Logroñés.

Calle del Laurel, known as "the path of the elephants" and Calle San Juan are typical streets where various restaurants and foodstuffs can be found. Calle Marqués de San Nicolás and Calle Mayor are the main areas where the young guns and the not-so-young-guns spend weekend nights.

El máximo exponente del deporte Logroñés es el Club Balonmano Ciudad de Logroño. Bajo la denominación Darien Logroño, compite en la categoría de plata del balonmano nacional: División de Honor B. [CB Ciudad de Logroño].

Club Deportivo Logroñés represents the city in soccer. The team was founded in 1940 que llegó a jugar en primera división durante nueve temporadas. Es el equipo que más afición atrae a Las Gaunas por encima del Logroñés Club de Fútbol (fundado en el año 2000 como Club Deportivo Recreación) que actualmente está una categoría más arriba aunque sin apenas afición.
