Longwood is a city in Seminole County, Florida, United States. The population was 13,745 at the 2000 census. As of 2004, the population recorded by the U.S. Census Bureau is 13,571 [link].

Longwood is located at [28°42′7″N, 81°20′42″W] (28.702061, -81.345098)[Geographic references#1GR1].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 14.5 km² (5.6 mi²). 13.8 km² (5.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.8 km² (0.3 mi²) of it (5.17%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census[Geographic references#2GR2] of 2000, there were 13,745 people, 5,025 households, and 3,678 families residing in the city. The population density was 997.6/km² (2,583.7/mi²). There were 5,189 housing units at an average density of 376.6/km² (975.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 87.30% White, 3.60% African American, 0.26% Native American, 2.47% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 3.90% from other races, and 2.42% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.05% of the population.

There were 5,025 households out of which 35.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.8% were married couples living together, 12.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.8% were non-families. 19.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.09.

In the city the population was spread out with 25.2% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 30.4% from 25 to 44, 25.0% from 45 to 64, and 12.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 93.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $51,667, and the median income for a family was $55,758. Males had a median income of $36,309 versus $27,113 for females. The per capita income for the city was $21,714. About 6.0% of families and 6.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.8% of those under age 18 and 5.9% of those age 65 or over.
