Plot summary
Jim (played by Peter O'Toole), is an ambitious young Englishman who sets off as first mate on the S.S. Patna, a ship travelling to Mecca with a cargo of Muslim pilgrims. A storm threatens the ship, and when the crew deserts on the ship's two lifeboats, Jim unthinkly joins them. Later, there is a Royal Enquiry after the Patna is salvaged and Jim is the only one to stand trial. Wracked with guilt, he admits it was an act of cowardice and he is stripped of his papers.
Jim then spends his time taking up small jobs in the South Pacific, until he is rescued by Marlow (played by Jack Hawkins), who arranges for him to travel to a distant trading post in Patusan. Jim sees the voyage as an opportunity to redeem himself and move on with his life.
