Lord Temporal
Encyclopedia : L : LO : LOR : Lord Temporal
In the United Kingdom Parliament the Lords Temporal are secular members of the House of Lords due to appointment as Life Peers or inheriting the title as an Hereditary peer. This differentiates them from the Lords Spiritual, who are members by virture of their status as bishops in the Church of England.
Prior to the recent reform of the House of Lords, all peers were (potentially) members of the House of Lords, and all were Lords Temporal in this sense. The ongoing reforms limit membership in the Lords to Life Peers and a number of elected Hereditary Peers, the term seems to apply to those secular Lords who retain membership in the House of Lords.
