Love Boat

Encyclopedia : L : LO : LOV : Love Boat

For the television show, see The Love Boat.
The Overseas Chinese Youth Language Training and Study Tour to the Republic of China is a four-week summer program for about 750-1200 college-aged overseas Chinese, which is often nicknamed Love Boat. In Chinese it is also colloquially referred to as mei-jia-ying (美加營) - America and Canada Camp, a reference to where most of the participants originate. The program has two camps stationed at Jian Tan (劍潭) and one camp in Tai Zhong (台中).

The primary goal of the program is to acquaint, or re-acquaint, young people of Chinese descent living in other parts of the world with Chinese culture and language. Thus participants take brief courses in language and arts, attend lectures, and take scenic tours of Taiwan.

It is rumored that many participants “hook up” (hence the Love Boat nickname). Allegedly, unplanned pregnancies in the past resulted in more stringent rules for participants, including strictly enforced curfews.
