"Love Will Never Do (Without You)" was the seventh single (final in the U.S.) from the album Rhythm Nation 1814 by American R&B artist Janet Jackson.

Song Information

The song became well known for its "love-will-conquer-all" theme. It became the turning point in Jackson's career as she entered the next phase of her music career with her next album. The song became her fifth number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and became the final of seven top-five singles for Jackson making her the first artist to achieve that number.

Janet, in an effort to take a turn with her image, decided to shoot a sexy video with photographer Herb Ritts, for the final single of Rhythm Nation 1814, "Love Will Never Do (Without You)." Originally Jackson wanted to wear a dress for the video, but director, Herb Ritts envisioned Jackson in nothing more than a black top and a pair of jeans. The video, which features actor/fashion models Antonio Sabato Jr. and Djimon Hounsou, proved to be a turning point for Jackson. No longer was she the young, innocent, shy little girl, the public had grown to know her as. She was now a fully developed woman, who had finally carved out her own place in music history. On the Design of a Decade 1986/1996 DVD, there is a black-and-white and colorized version of the video. Jackson won a MTV Video Music Award for Best Female Video and was nominated for Best Choreography and Best Art Direction in 1991. The video ranked #13 on Rolling Stone's: "The 100 Top Music Videos", #72 on VH1's: "100 Greatest Videos", and #88 on MTV's: "100 Greatest Videos Ever Made".
