Lower Styria

Encyclopedia : L : LO : LOW : Lower Styria

Lower Styria (Slovenian Spodnja Štajerska, German Untersteiermark, Latin Styria) is made up of the southern third of the former Duchy of Styria and is a region in northeastern Slovenia. The northern two-thirds of the former duchy lie in southeastern Austria and are therefore referred to as Upper Styria. The Duchy of Styria was divided in 1918 after World War I, with the Kingdom of Yugoslavia receiving Lower Styria. Slovenia gained independence from the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1991.

Lower Styria has no official status as an administrative unit within Slovenia, however the association with the informal province (Slovenian pokrajina) is very common. Lower Styria is famous for its white wine.

The capital of Lower Styria is Maribor (German Marburg). Other cities include Celje and Ptuj.
