In the NBC television series ER, the fictional character Lucy Knight was a medical student portrayed by actress Kellie Martin. The character was part of the show for the 5th and 6th seasons. When she was first introduced on ER, Dr. Doug Ross called her a "by the book" medical student.

Dr. John Carter soon became her mentor in the emergency room. Knight and Carter became close friends, and they had even become romantically involved, briefly.

At the beginning of her resdiency at County General, she was popular with the attendings and nurses; who treated her as another colleague. The exception was Nurse Hathaway, who repeatedly gave her the cold shoulder. This changes later on after a heart-to-heart. Whe she is first given to Carter as his student, their relationship was friendly and cooperative. This did not last. Soon after an incident where Lucy takes credit for an IV administered by Hathaway, she is thrown into a situation where she was expected to perform said procedure in a life or death situation. This, combined with her lack of responsibilty during a Medical Student Halloween party whichs ends with two students nearly dying from Esctasy overdoses, leads to a falling-out and a period of fighting and chaos in their relationship. This ends sevral weeks later when they are forced to scower Chicago for the dad of a girl with a rare blood-type she needs that is only present in the blood of her fugitive father.

At the end of Season 5, it was revealed that Lucy had been on a constant prescription for Ritalin ever since the fourth grade, due to a hyperactivity disorder. She tried once to lay off her medication permanently, but couldn't manage to pay attention to her work, so she went back to taking it. She becomes Peter Benton's student and got on well with him.

On February 14th, 2000, Paul Sobricki, a man with schizophrenia was checked into the emergency room. While in a delusional state, he acquired a knife that was to be used to cut a Valentine's Day cake, and managed to stab first Knight (multiple times, including slashing her throat [link]) and then Dr. Carter, who collapsed and saw Lucy near the bed, covered in blood but still alive. While Dr. Weaver and Dr. Corday were initially able to repair the damage to Knight's body, she soon developed complications, including a pulmonary embolus. Dr. Corday and Dr. Romano both tried to save her life, but Knight died while on the operating table at 2:56 am, throwing Dr. Romano into a fit of rage.

Lucy's memorial service took place in the episode "Be Patient". Carter asked Jing-Mei how her funeral was, she said it was quite wierd. That same day Lucy's mother, Barbara Knight came to clear out her locker. She also met Carter and asked him how he felt when he was stabbed. To ease her pain, he lies and says that it was quick and he did not feel anything [link].

Dr. Carter blamed himself for Knight's death. Her death, along with the pain caused by his own stab wounds, contributed to his drug abuse. After Carter's return from an Atlanta inpatient rehabilitation clinic, Carter's grandmother begged him to leave the ER, saying that the place killed his friend Knight and nearly did the same to him. He refused, and eventually recovered from the trauma.
