On November 5 1645 she was married per procura to the Polish king Władysław IV. She was compelled to change her name to Ludwika Maria, because the name Maria was reserved in Poland only for the Mother of God. The wedding ceremony took place on March 10 1646 in Warsaw. After the death of Władysław IV in 1648, she married his younger brother Jan II Kazimierz on May 30 1649.

Ludwika Maria was a very active woman, even commanding the Polish army. In 1652 she founded the first Polish newspaper Merkuriusz Polski.

She died in Warsaw in 1667, and was buried in Kraków at Wawel.
