Luff
Encyclopedia : L : LU : LUF : Luff
Luff has two separate, but closely related, sailing-related meanings.
The first, a noun, luff, is the name for a particular part of a sail.
The second, a verb (luffing, etc), means either:
- the flapping of a sail when a sailboat is heading upwind, and the boat is pointed too closely to the direction of the wind for the sail(s) to draw properly, or
- to steer a sailboat closer to the direction of the wind, such that the sails luff (e.g. "to luff up"), and the boat slows down and stops.
