Luleå University of Technology or Luleå tekniska universitet is a university in Luleå, Sweden. It has five campuses, located in Luleå (the main campus), Boden (health sciences), Kiruna (space science), Skellefteå (wood technology and computer game engineering) and Piteå (School of Music).

History

The university was founded on June 1 1971 at Porsön in Luleå as Högskolenheten i Luleå. The name was later changed to Högskolan i Luleå (Luleå University College) and in 1997 to the current Luleå University of Technology when it was given university status and now is known as one of Swedens top engineering schools.

Students' unions

As of 2005, there are three students' unions at the university, Teknologkåren (the Student Association of Engineering) [link] for students studying towards an engineering or other degree within the field of technology, Studentkåren vid Musikhögskolan i Piteå (the Students' Union at the Piteå School of Music) and Luleå studentkår (Luleå Students' Union) [link] for most other students.

The unions are divided into sections, each responsible for a number of academic programmes. They are run by a board of eight to ten students for no profit.
