In the animated series The Simpsons, Lunchlady Doris (voiced by Doris Grau) is an overweight, middle-aged, and laconic worker at the Springfield Elementary School cafeteria. During school cut backs, she also served as the school nurse.
It was occasionally intimated that she and Groundskeeper Willie are romantically involved. She has served many distasteful things to the students, including whole beef hearts, horse testicles (which are apparently rich in iron), Grade-F meat ("Mostly circus animals, some filler"), rat's milk, ground newspapers, and ground-up gym mats ("There's very little meat in these gym mats").
She is also known for her dry sense of humour as demonstrated when Lisa approached her at the school cafeteria:
- Lisa: Uhh, excuse me? Isn't there anything here that doesn't have meat in it?
- Doris: Possibly the meat loaf.
- Lisa: Well, I believe you're required to provide a vegetarian alternative.
- Doris: [Picks up a hot dog in a bun, shakes the weiner out, and slaps the bun down on Lisa's tray.] Yum. It's rich in bunly goodness.
- Lisa: [Drolly.] Do you remember when you lost your passion for this work?
After Grau's death in 1995, Lunchlady Doris was retired out of respect. Since then, Lunchlady Doris has been moved to a silent background character and has mostly been seen in crowds and groups of other faculty members. In one episode, when Skinner is planning to rearrange the lunch timetables, she opens her mouth to speak, but is interrupted by Milhouse.
Lunchlady Doris had a speaking role in "Lisa's Sax", aired in 1997, despite the fact that the voice actress died in 1995. The reason for this is that, this episode was produced in the '3G' line of production, and the 4 episodes were aired in Season 8 & 9. Those 4 episodes were produced separately by Al Jean & Mike Reiss in their years of production (when they were in charge).
The episode "Team Homer" was dedicated to the memory of Doris Grau. It was also implied in this episode that she is the mother of the Squeaky Voiced Teen.
