Máire Mac an tSaoi

Encyclopedia : M : MI : MIR : Máire Mac an tSaoi

Born on April 4, 1922, Máire Mac an tSaoi is the daughter of late Belfast IRA man, Sean McEntee, and his wife, Margaret Browne McEntee. She has described herself as a nationalist, a republican and a pacifist -- which can be said to be unusual -- especially in Ireland. Máire became a fervent supporter and student of Gaelic, in which she is fluent.

She married the revisionist historian and iconoclastic politician Conor Cruise O'Brien (despite the fact that he had been married once previously, albeit to a non-Catholic), and they adopted a child. Perhaps O'Brien had a deeper effect on Máire than he might have suspected since, to her credit, she assailed the Catholic convert writer and republican Francis Stuart, the son-in-law of republican heroine Maud Gonne-McBride, for his perceived anti-Semitism.
