The leader of the Tainui Māori is known as the Māori King or Queen. This is a non-constitutional role with no actual legal power. However, there is considerable mana and prestige in the role. The current Māori Queen, Te Atairangi Kaahu, is of the line of the first Māori King, Potatau Te Wherowhero and was elected in 1966.
The official residence is Turongo House in Turangawaewae in the Waikato.
