M.K. Stalin

Encyclopedia : M : MK : MKS : M.K. Stalin

M.K. Stalin (born 1953), is the son of the renowned politician and the present chief minister of Tamilnadu M. Karunanidhi. He was named after the Russian leader Joseph Stalin, who had passed away in the same year as his birth. He heads the youth wing of the DMK and was elected as mayor of chennai in 1996. He was also elected to the Tamilnadu Legislative assembly from Thousand lights constituency in chennai.

Although he was re-elected as mayor of Chennai in October 2001, Stalin, who was also a member of the Legislative Assembly of Tamil Nadu, had to resign his position as mayor in June 2002 after the Assembly passed a "one-man, one-post" law barring legislators from also holding important elective posts in local bodies.

M.K.Stalin is currently holding the post of Minister for Rural Development and Municipal Administration in the Government of Tamilnadu after he was elected again from Thousand lights constituency in the 2006 assembly elections.

He is considered the next in-line to lead the DMK, after his father, M. Karunanidhi. Some criticise this move as Karunanidhi trying to start a political empire, but others see it as the normal passage of power.
