Matthew Norton Wise is a professor in the history of science at UCLA. He is also the co-director of the UCLA Center for Society and Genetics. In the middle of the so-called Science Wars a few 'influential' scientists prevented him being appointed at the Princeton Institute of Advanced Studies, Wise being very critical of the essentialism that was shown when scientists referred to 'their' Enlightenment. He has famously attacked in which they perceive the obstruction of science by the Academic Left.
In the fourth term of the academical year 2004/5 he taught at Utrecht University and he is spending much of his time at the Berlin Max Planck Institute.
