M1 (Johannesburg)
Encyclopedia : M : M1 : M1J : M1 (Johannesburg)
The M1 is a major north-south highway in Johannesburg, South Africa. It connects the Central Business District with Sandton, where the M1 turns into the N1 and continues north towards Pretoria and Polokwane (Pietersburg).
Towards the south, the M1 merges with the M2, which connects the southern suburbs with the Central Business District.
Congestion
The M1 highway typically experiences an extraordinary amount of traffic congestion as more than 300,000 commuters move daily between Pretoria and Johannesburg. While this is most prevalent during rush hour, many areas experience almost continuous congestion during daytime. The proposed Gautrain railway system aims to relieve some of the traffic on the M1.External references
