The M83 group (also known as NGC 5128 group) is a group of galaxies about 15 million light-years away in the constellations Hydra and Centaurus. It contains the nearest radio galaxy to Earth, Centaurus A, and a messier object, Southern Pinwheel Galaxy.

Name

The proper name of this group is the Messier 83 (M83) group. All galaxy groups are named after their most massive or largest galaxy, except when they contain a Messier object, in which case the group is named after the most massive or largest Messier object. This group is named after the Southern Pinwheel Galaxy (M83), even though the largest and most massive galaxy is Centaurus A.
