MAXjet Airways

Encyclopedia : M : MA : MAX : MAXjet Airways

MAXjet Airways is a United States-based all-business class, low fare transatlantic airline serving London's Stansted Airport. It offers passengers airport lounge access (flagship lounge at Stansted; shared, non-proprietary at JFK and Dulles), premium complimentary meals and beverages, and on-demand in-flight entertainment. MAXjet's corporate slogan is "It's just good business".

History

MAXjet received FAA certification in August 2005 and operated its first service from New York to London on November 1, 2005. Originally called Skylink Airways, and founded in 2003, the airline was conceived as a transatlantic low-cost carrier that would code share with domestic low-cost carriers at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. It changed its name to avoid a potential conflict with a similarly-named Canadian travel services company.

During its start-up phase, management expressed concern over the economics of applying the low cost carrier model to transatlantic routes, and instead repositioned the airline as a premium all-business-class service. However, Maxjet's target market is premium economy and price-sensitive business class passengers, unlike the other Stansted-New York premium-class startup carrier Eos Airlines which aims to compete with the major transatlantic carriers' full-fare business class.

Destinations

Presently, MAXjet serves New York's JFK Sundays to Fridays and Dulles with five flights weekly. The airline is evaluating future services linking London Stansted to Boston, Chicago, Orlando, Las Vegas, San Jose, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Dallas, with further expansion into Continental Europe.

Fleet

MAXjet's aircraft are configured with 102 seats. The airline currently has 3 Boeing 767-200 aircraft (June 2006), with an average fleet age of 21.3 years as of March 2006 (previously operated by Qantas [link] and TWA[link]).

The company reportedly plans to operate six aircraft by the end of 2006 and 11 by the end of 2007.

MAXjet's aircraft are fitted with traditional leather business-class "cradle" seats with a 60 inch seat pitch (distance between a seat and the same point on the seat in front of it) and a 160-degree recline.

On-demand entertainment, which includes 100 hours of movies, television programs and music videos as well as pure music audio content, is available via individual portable media players, which are provided before each flight. This is because MAXjet aircraft have a relatively old cabin fit: the seats are not equipped with conventional built-in entertainment systems.

The airline's catering uses restaurant china, metal cutlery and stemmed glassware, and offers complimentary premium liquor, beer, champagne and a regularly changing wine selection.
