MDI Media Window
Encyclopedia : M : MD : MDI : MDI Media Window
MDI or Media Delivery Index is an industrial measurement initiative for IPTV networks. It was first submitted to the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) as an RFC in May 2005. BRIDGE Technologies have followed up this industry initiative by developing a graphical scale for easy access to MDI data in a Media Window and subsequently standardized this for multivendor purposes. MDI is represented mathematically as two numbers. One representing the DF or Delay Factor, indicating the buffer needed to accommodate IAT or Inter Arrival Time variances in IP packets. The other number is the MLR or Media Loss Rate, which states the number of Transport Stream packets lost over a time period - usually one second, thereby giving DF:MLR as the mathematical representation of MDI.
