MTV Europe Music Awards
Encyclopedia : M : MT : MTV : MTV Europe Music Awards
The MTV Europe Music Awards were established in 1994 by MTV Europe to celebrate the most popular music videos in Europe. Originally beginning as an alternative to the American MTV Video Music Awards, the MTV Europe Music Awards is today a popular celebration of what MTV viewers consider the best in music. Unlike the VMAs, most of the awards are voted for by the viewers.
MTV Europe Music Awards always changes its host city. Up until now Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom hosted the event twice.
The awards are presented annually and broadcast live on MTV Europe, MTV and most of the International MTV channels.
MTV Europe Music Awards is often criticized as being too American and out of touch with music that is popular in continental Europe. Organizers of the 12th MTV Europe Music Awards 2005, November 3rd in Lisbon, Portugal hoped to change that and give back the European touch to the show.
To date, Eminem has won the most awards with 6 in total. He is followed by Britney Spears (5), Backstreet Boys (5), Madonna (5), The Prodigy (5), Robbie Williams (4), Spice Girls (3), Coldplay (3), Alicia Keys (3), Linkin Park (3), Jennifer López (3), Oasis (3), and Justin Timberlake (3).
