On May 18, 2006 Sky Television announced the launch of a wholly-owned and operated localised MTV channel. The channel will launch August 19, 2006 as a 24-hour signature MTV channel featuring MTV programming from MTV US and MTV Europe. The channel will also feature locally-tailored programming, scheduling, on-air promos and feature New Zealand presenters. MTV New Zealand will be headquartered in Auckland, New Zealand.
The announcement of the channel has already triggered discussion among the public and in online forums. The channel has the backing of several influential New Zealanders in the music industry including: Ed St. John, President and CEO, Warner Music Australasia; Denis Handlin, Chairman & CEO, SONY BMG Music Entertainment Australia & New Zealand; Andy Murnane, CEO, Dawn Raid Entertainment; and local hip-hop artist Savage. Existing music television services C4, Juice TV and AltTV have so far refused to comment. Some issues may be encountered after the MTV launch due to C4's high use of MTV programming, it remains to be seen whether MTV will allow C4 to continue broadcasting it's programming.
In the late-90's MTV was operated in New Zealand as a free to air channel. This group is not affiliated with the new Sky TV channel.
