Encyclopedia : M : MV : MVC : MV Christmas Seal

MV Christmas Seal a naval patrol craft built in the United States for use at the Argentia Air Force base was converted to a floating TB medical clinic for the coastal communities of Newfoundland and Labrador. The vessel used by the US Navy was purchased in 1944 by the Newfoundland Tuberculosis Association and outfitted with an X-Ray unit to test residents of isolated communities for TB. The vessel was funded by funds raised from the sale of Christmas Seals and through other forms of public donations. The vessel captained by Peter Troake carried the Cross of Lorraine at the mast head.

The vessel was sold in 1971 and was wrecked off the coast of Nova Scotia in May 13, 1976 while under charter to the Bedford Institute of Oceanography. Wood salvaged from the MV Christmas Seal is been used to build a Canadian guitar [CBC Documentary] to denote a patchwork of Canadian history.
