Encyclopedia : M : MV : MVO : MV Oriana (1995)

The MV Oriana is a cruise ship owned and operated by P&O Cruises. Launched in Southampton in 1995 by the Queen, Oriana has a gross tonnage of 69,153 tonnes. She was one of the first of the new generation of ultra-large cruise ships that have appeared, and, along with the other ultra-large ships, radically changed the scale and nature of recreational cruising.

At the time of her launch she was touted as the largest cruise ship in the world. Since then however many ships measuring over 100,000 tonnes have been placed in service.

According to the official P&O Cruising website she has an overall length of 853 feet, beam of 106 feet, draught of 26 feet fully laden and a maximum speed of 24 knots. Her crew is listed as 794 and she carries 2016 passengers regularly with an occasionally increased maximum of 2272. She was built by Meyer Werft in Germany and has 4 medium speed diesel engines.

She is named after the long serving and well known P&O vessel SS Oriana, which was launched in 1959.
