The M-Scow is a 16 foot, sloop rigged scow. Commonly called the M-16, the M-scow is sailed widely from Minnesota to New Jersey. The boat was originally designed by Melges Boat Works and became an ILYA sanctioned class in 1959. Over the years, there have been two builders, Melges and Johnson Boat Works The M-20 is a slightly newer, and bigger version of the M-16. The M-16 sports bilgeboards and two small "paddle" rudders along with a rotating mast. In 2000, Melges, the only remaining builder, revamped the M-16. The current version uses the exact MC hull, with a stationary rig and a single rudder. In recent years, the M-16 fleets have become progressively smaller and no new boats have been made since 2003. Melges does still sell the M-16 although that may change with the new Melges17.
