MacLehose Trail

MacLehose Trail (麥理浩徑), opened on October 26,1979, is a trail that spans much of the New Territories, starting from Pak Tam Chung, Sai Kung in the east to Tuen Mun in the west. The whole trail measures 100 kilometres, marked along the path with 200 signposts at 500m intervals. It was named after Crawford Murray MacLehose, the longest serving governor in office the Governor of Hong Kong. MacLehose himself was an enthusiastic hiker. The trail passes through a variety of natural and beautiful scenries.

Stages

The trail is divided into ten stages.
  1. Pak Tam Chung to Long Ke, 10.6 km, 3.0 hours, Easy Walk
  2. Long Ke to Pak Tam Au, 13.5 km, 5.0 hours, Fairy Difficult
  3. Pak Tam Au to Kei Ling Ha, 10.2 km, 4.0 hours, Very Difficult
  4. Kei Ling Ha to Tai Lo Shan, 12.7 km, 5.0 hours, Very Difficult
  5. Tai Lo Shan to Tai Po Road, 10.6 km, 3.0 hours, Fairy Difficult
  6. Tai Po Road to Shing Mun, 4.6 km, 1.5 hours, Easy Walk
  7. Shing Mun to Lead Mine Pass, 6.2 km, 2.5 hours, Fairy Diffcult
  8. Lead Mine Pass to Route Twisk, 9.7 km, 4.0 hours, Fairy Difficult
  9. Route Twisk to Tin Fu Tsai, 6.3 km, 2.5 hours, Easy Walk
  10. Tin Fu Tsai to Tuen Mun, 15.6 km, 5.0, Easy Walk

Trailwalker

Oxfam Trailwalker—a major fundraising event in Hong Kong—takes place annually in November on the MacLehose Trail (with a slight variation of the finishing point at Perowne Barracks near Hong Kong Gold Coast rather than Tuen Mun)
