Mac and Me was a 1988 movie based largely on the success of E.T. (1982). It is known for its numerous and blatant product placements, including Coca-Cola, Skittles, and McDonald's (the aliens need to drink only Coke to live, and a dance number takes place in a McDonald's franchise), through which Leonard Maltin has labeled the film as being "more TV commercial than movie". In fact, the movie was financed by these companies.

Mac and Me grossed $6,424,112 in the United States. The movie ends with a freeze frame and the words "We'll be back!" superimposed, but after its dismal box office returns any planned sequel was shelved. It was rated PG in the United States by the MPAA.

The film has gained a measure of notoriety recently thanks to actor Paul Rudd, who, as part of a running gag from appearances on Late Night With Conan O'Brien, will frequently show the famous clip of the wheelchaired Michael (Jonathan Ward) flying off a cliff, while Mac watches on, instead of showing clips from the actual movie Rudd is there to promote.
