Macrolepidoptera
Encyclopedia : M : MA : MAC : Macrolepidoptera
Macrolepidoptera was a term used at one time to denote a Suborder of Order Lepidoptera, the third-largest Order of the Insects. This suborder is no longer recognised by most lepidopterists, though it does sometimes appear as an unranked monophyletic grouping in cladistic classifications. The two families Geometridae and Noctuidae account for roughly one quarter of all known lepidoptera.
The grouping typically includes the following Superfamilies:
- Bombycoidea -- Bombycoid Moths.
- Drepanoidea -- Drepanids.
- Geometroidea -- Inchworms.
- Hesperioidea -- Skippers.
- Lasiocampoidea -- Lappet moths.
- Mimallonoidea -- Sack bearers.
- Noctuoidea -- Owlet moths.
- Papilionoidea -- Butterflies.
- Sphingoidea -- Sphinx moths.
- Uranioidea -- Epiplemid moths.
plus a few rare families whose exact position in the classification is variable:
- Axiidae
- Callidulidae -- Old World butterfly moths.
- Hedylidae -- New World butterfly moths.
