The Magna Defender is a fictional character from the TV series. He is a warrior who has been alive for many years, and is the sworn enemy of Scorpius. History and Powers He was originally an ally alongside Zordon, Ninjor, and several other good beings in the battle against evil millennia ago. During that battle, Magna's son Zika was killed by Scorpius, and the Magna Defender swore revenge. However, before he could do so, he was sealed in a pit on Mirinoi by his nemesis Treacheron. Years later, Red Galaxy Ranger Leo's brother Mike fell into the same pit. The Magna Defender fused with him, escaping the pit and setting out after Scorpius and the legendary Lights of Orion. Using his Torozord, he fought several battles against his enemy. Despite common foes, the Defender did not get along with the Power Rangers. Later, while attempting to destroy Scorpius, Defender was wounded and revealed to Leo that he was merged with Mike. Seeking to undo the damage he caused to Terra Venture in his attempt to finish off Scorpius, Magna threw himself into the energy pit he had created, destroying it. In the process, Mike was released. Magna's spirit later appeared to Mike when the Rangers were in peril, giving him the Magna Blaster in Sword mode, the source of the Magna Defender powers. Much like with the Quasar Sabers, a two-part morpher also appeared on Mike's arms, allowing him to become the new Magna Defender. Using the Magna Blaster and Torozord, Mike did battle with many foes of the Rangers. Later, Mike sacrificed Torozord and his powers to free Terra Venture from the Lost Galaxy. Then the original Magna Defender's spirit appeared to Mike again, this time to congratulate him on how heroically he had used the powers and tell him that he had fulfilled the Magna Defender's destiny. Controversy The Magna Defender's position as a Ranger is a point of controversy among fans. Points for both sides of the argument can be made, but chief among these points is the fact that Magna "Defender" doesn't carry the title of "Ranger". However, consider these facts: - (Against): The Magna Defender does not have the word "Ranger" in his title. - (Against): BullBlack (Magna Defender's Super Sentai counterpart) didn't have a morphing device (even after a Human replaced him and transformed into his suit (with a transformation sequence). + (For): Things in Super Sentai are not necessarily applicable to Power Rangers. It should also be noted that Gold Ranger (Kingranger) did have a henshin/morphing device in Sentai, but not in Power Rangers. + (For): The Magna Defender has a morphing device. As well as a morphing call, and morphing sequence. + (For): The Magna Defender has a Zord. - (Against): Many of the Power Rangers enemies and allies had zords as well. (Villains would also sometimes make mecha and call them "zords", but they aren't counted as real Zords.) + (For): The Magna Defender (as Mike) has a secret identity form, where-as beings like Ninjor, Auric, and various other Ranger allies do not. + (For): The Magna Defender participated in the in Space/Lost Galaxy team-up episode, To the Tenth Power (He didn't, however, participate in the following episode, The Power of Pink, in which the in Space Rangers also appeared.) As you can see, the Fors tend to outweigh the Againsts in the debate of is he, or isn't he. In retrospect, Mike as the Magna Defender can be considered the sixth Ranger of Power Rangers: Lost Galaxy, in a non-official capacity. Where as the original Magna Defender was just an alien life form. Still, this is all speculation as no official word has ever been given.
