Mahadevi Verma (1907-1987) was an Indian Poetess.
Biography
She was born in 1907 near Farrukhabad in Uttranchal State of India. Her father was a lawyer. At a very early age she got married and became a widow too - not so late. She however had interest in literature and continued to be around it. Her education was done in Jabalpur and Allahabad (also known as Prayag) where she founded 'Prayag Mahila Samiti'. She promoted the education of girls. She also participated in Indian Freedom Struggle.
Writing Style
She was one of the four Stambh (pillars) of Chhayavad in Hindi Literature alongwith Suryakant Tripathi 'Nirala', Jai Shankar Prasad and Sumitra Nandan Pant. Her wrinting always carried an emotional pain enjoying pleasure in suffering:
- 'Tujko peeda mein dhundhungi,
- Tumme dhundhungi peeda.'
I'll search pain in you.)
In her poems she belived in a lover who is unique and far away (often critics link it with the God). Her poems were waiting for an eternal lover, whom she was intimate with. Her priyatam (lover), however, remained always quiet. Her language was nourished with Tatsam and Tatdav words. By writing in Dipshikhak, which contained 51 peculiar lyrics, She ushered a new area in Hindi Literature - Rahasyavaad. She is often compared with Meera Bai. She however had a differnet feeling about the lord of the uviverse:
Kya pooja kya erchan re
What for I should worship. (A vague translation)
She also wrote 'Gadya'. After reading her 'Gadya', sometimes it becomes a matter of debate, whether she was a poetess or Gadya-Lekhika. Her stories too revolves around the destituted spirit of human or other (often her pets) living beings . She was awarded with the prestigious Jnanpith Puraskar in 1982.
