Mahaffie House
Encyclopedia : M : MA : MAH : Mahaffie House
The Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm Historic Site, locally known as the Mahaffie farmstead, is located in Olathe, Kansas, the center and county seat of affluent Johnson County. The house was originally a stop along the Oregon and California Trails which originated from Westport Missouri to the Southeast, reaching its hey-day during the 1850's with the rise of travel west.
The House has now been converted into a [museum] and one stop shop for all interested in the era. It is situated on almost 40 acres (160,000 m²) of land including parking across the street. (External link: [Google Maps Aerial Image]) It frequently hosts several civil war reenactments (think Bloody Kansas and bushwhackers) as well as having an in-house blacksmith and other various era-specific artisans.
The original farm was founded by James Beatty Mahaffie and his wife Lucinda, in 1858. They ran it until 1870 and stayed on the farm until 1886.
JB and Lucinda Mahaffie left their name not only on the Museum, but on a street in Olathe, on Mahaffie Elementary School, and on a recent subdivision.
