Malcolm Gladwell (born September 1, 1963) is a United Kingdom-born, Canadian-raised journalist now based in New York City who has been a staff writer for The New Yorker since 1996. He is known as the author of the bestselling books The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference (2000) and Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking (2005).

Gladwell's English father is a Civil Engineering Professor at the University of Waterloo; his mother is a Jamaican-born psychotherapist. Though born in the United Kingdom, he was raised in Elmira, Ontario, and graduated with a degree in history from the University of Toronto in 1984. From 1987 to 1996, he was a science writer, and later the New York bureau chief, for the Washington Post.

Several of Gladwell's feature stories have achieved significant standing with the public over the years and according to an article in New Scientist by Stephen Thanabalan, Gladwell has effectively fostered a strong audience following for his work, which addresses the ostensibly disparate areas of sociology, psychology, human communications, business, society, politics, technology, and consumer behavior.

His writing often deals with the unexpected implications of research in the social sciences, particularly sociology and psychology.

In November 2005 Leonardo DiCaprio bought the rights of the book Blink from Gladwell for $1,000,000. Gladwell is reported to be involved in the film as advisor, with another writer scheduled to write a screenplay on the basis of this book.

In early 2006, a parody of Blink entitled Blank: The Power of Not Actually Thinking at All was published by "Noah Tall" (a pen name), as was a "counter-argument" book by Michael R. LeGault, Think: How Crucial Decisions Can't Be Made In The Blink Of An Eye.
