Mammoth Records
Encyclopedia : M : MA : MAM : Mammoth Records
Founded in 1989 in Carrboro, North Carolina, Mammoth Records was one of the premiere independent record labels of the 1990s. It's roster featured such diverse talent as: Squirrel Nut Zippers, Juliana Hatfield, Victoria Williams, Frente, Joe Henry, Fun-Da-Mental, Machines of Loving Grace, The Melvins and Jason & The Scorchers.
The label went from a stand alone company to being a part of Atlantic Records in 1993. That relationship soured (reportedly due to president Jay Faires) and the label hit the open market again in 1997.
The label was purchased by The Walt Disney Company in 1998. Faires left in 1999 along with most of the entire staff and the label was re-built with new president Rob Seiendberg. In 2003 Disney closed up shop at Mammoth Records and folded the company into Hollywood Records.
