Manger

Encyclopedia : M : MA : MAN : Manger

A manger is a trough or box of carved stone or wood construction used to hold food for animals (as in a stable).

A manger translates in French to "une mangeoire." Manger is the French verb for "to eat."

Mangers are mostly used in livestock raising. They are also used to feed wild animals, e.g., in nature reserves.

A manger is also a Christian symbol, associated with nativity scenes where the baby Jesus used a manger in place of a crib (Luke 2:7). A favorite Christmas carol is "Away in a Manger."

Manger may also refer to the former Norwegian municipality.
