Manning is a city in Clarendon County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 4,025 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Clarendon County[Geographic references#6GR6].
Geography
Manning is located at (33.693998, -80.215408)[Geographic references#1GR1].
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.2 km² (2.4 mi²), all land.
Demographics
As of the census[Geographic references#2GR2] of 2000, there were 4,025 people, 1,550 households, and 1,063 families residing in the city. The population density was 644.8/km² (1,671.1/mi²). There were 1,727 housing units at an average density of 276.7/km² (717.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 35.80% White, 62.36% African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.62% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.40% from other races, and 0.50% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.04% of the population.There were 1,550 households out of which 31.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 35.3% were married couples living together, 29.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.4% were non-families. 29.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.10.
In the city the population was spread out with 27.8% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 24.7% from 25 to 44, 21.8% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 80.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 72.4 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $22,483, and the median income for a family was $26,269. Males had a median income of $26,135 versus $19,086 for females. The per capita income for the city was $11,502. About 23.8% of families and 30.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 38.5% of those under age 18 and 20.3% of those age 65 or over.
