Manuelito

Manuelito (1818-1893) was one of the principle war chiefs of the Navajo people during the Long Walk Period. A prominent Navajo leader who for several years led a group of warriors in resisting federal efforts to appropriate Navajo territory and remove the Navajo people to New Mexico. Finally surrendering to Col. D.G. Miles in 1859, Manuelito was elected commander of the Indian police force. He was later one of the signatories to the Treaty of 1868, which provided for the return of the Navajo people from Bosque Redondo and established the original boundaries of the Navajo reservation.
