Marathon is a town located in the Thunder Bay district in Ontario. It is located on the north shore of Lake Superior north of Pukaskwa National Park. It is linked by Peninsula Road (formerly Highway 626) with the southern route of the Trans-Canada Highway, which is also Highway 17, about 2 km east. It is located east of Thunder Bay and Nipigon, southwest of Hearst, west of Wawa and north of Sault Ste. Marie. It is situated on the Canadian Pacific Railway route running between Thunder Bay and Sault Ste. Marie.

Geography and General Information

Marathon has a 5 schools (Marathon High, École Secondaire Cité-Supérieur, MTPS (Elementary), École Val des Bois, and Holy Saviour Catholic) , a children's park called Del Earle (named after one of the towns founders) , and two hotels (Zero 100, Travellers). Marathon's industries include the Hemlo Operation's Gold mines: Williams Operating Corporation , Golden Giant (decommissioned 2005) and David Bell and a pulp mill: Marathon Pulp Inc. . The residential area encompasses an area starting from Lake Superior out to the relatively new Penn Lake Subdivision. The Pic River is found outside of town limits in the eastern part.

It is adjacent to the Peninsula Harbour and has several coves including Carden Cove, Sturdee Cove and Craddock Cove, all three located WNW of Marathon, in the surrounding area. It also has a lake named Penn Lake in the eastern part of the town. Heron Bay which is a town close by the shares post office and phone prefix's is to the south. The native reserve of Pic River is located on the outskirts of Pukaskwa National Park, which is the largest national park in Ontario.

Recent developments in the town include a new skatepark, basketball courts and the refinishing of the tennis courts. Road construction in the last few years has also taken place to the most severely degraded roads in the town.

The majority of the land outside the residential area of Marathon are forests and much of it are pine/spruce forests.

Marathon has a geographically important airport (designated CYSP) just north of the Trans Canada Highway, 2.6 miles northeast of the townsite.
