Location of Margate in Broward County in State of Florida

Margate is a city in Broward County, Florida and considered a suburb of Fort Lauderdale while also making up part of the South Florida metropolitan area. The city was named for its founder, Jack Marquese, and its location as a gateway to western Broward County. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 53,909. As of 2004, the population recorded by the U.S. Census Bureau is 55,152 ^[link].

Geography

Margate is located at [26°14′47″N, 80°12′44″W] (26.246259, -80.212343)^{[Geographic references#1GR1]}.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 23.3 km² (9.0 mi²). 22.8 km² (8.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it (1.89%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census^{[Geographic references#2GR2]} of 2000, there were 53,909 people, 22,714 households, and 14,332 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,362.6/km² (6,120.6/mi²). There were 24,740 housing units at an average density of 1,084.2/km² (2,808.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 78.80% White, 11.63% African American or Black, 0.26% Native American, 2.78% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 2.87% from other races, and 3.61% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 15.28% of the population.

There were 22,714 households out of which 25.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.1% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.9% were non-families. 30.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.95.

In the city the population was spread out with 20.9% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 21.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 89.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $38,722, and the median income for a family was $48,254. Males had a median income of $35,630 versus $26,624 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,308. About 5.5% of families and 8.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.7% of those under age 18 and 10.4% of those age 65 or over.

Margate was founded in 1955. Its planned 50th anniversary celebration in October 2005 was postponed by Hurricane Wilma.

The music school, Autry Music Institute is located in Margate.
