Marián Hossa (Born January 12 1979, in Stará Ľubovňa, Czechoslovakia, now Slovakia) is a Slovak professional ice hockey player. He plays right wing.

Playing career

Early in his career he suffered a severe injury to his anterior cruciate ligament while playing in with the Portland Winter Hawks, but recovered. He was drafted 12th overall in the NHL 1997 Entry Draft by Ottawa, and Hossa played his first six NHL seasons for Ottawa. In 2000, while playing for the Senators, Hossa accidentally clipped Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Bryan Berard in the eye blinding him and almost ending his career, an incident that deeply affected Hossa.

Today Hossa is regarded as one of the top forwards in the league, reaching the 30-goal plateau on multiple occasions, and hitting the 45-goal mark in 2002-2003 and had 80 points. He became the top scorer on the highly regarded Senators team that won a Presidents Trophy and made it to the Conference Finals in 2003.

In 2005, Hossa was engaged in contract negotiations with the Senators. Due to his point output and remarkable skill, his agent felt that he was worth more than the Senators were willing to pay, especially when the team's biggest financial backer was billionaire Eugene Melnyk. Senators' management disagreed, and before he was even signed, manager John Muckler was already discussing with Don Waddell the possibility of trading Hossa. On the morning of August 23rd, 2005 it was announced that he had signed a three year $18 million deal with the Senators; however, in a surprising move that afternoon he was traded to the Atlanta Thrashers along with defenceman Greg de Vries for star forward Dany Heatley. The trade resulted in Hossa's best season ever. He scored 39 goals and added 53 assists for 92 points, surpassing his previous career high by ten points.

Marián has represented the Slovak national hockey team on numerous occasions including the Winter Olympics at Salt Lake City in 2002 and Winter Olympics at Torino in 2006. He also played for Team Slovakia in 1997, 1999, 2001, 2004, 2005 and 2006 World Ice Hockey Championships. His brother, Marcel Hossa, is a member of the New York Rangers.
