Marie of Saxe-Altenburg

Princess Marie of Saxe-Altenburg (April 14 1818-January 9 1907), later Queen of Hanover, was the consort of George V of Hanover, a male-line grandson of King George III of the United Kingdom and Queen Charlotte.

Early life

Marie was born at Hildburghaussen, the eldest daughter of Josef, Duke of Saxe-Altenburg and Amelia of Wurttemburg.

Marriage

Marie married, on February 18, 1843, at Hanover, HRH George V of Hanover, then Crown Prince.

Queen of Hanover

The Crown Prince and Princess became King and Queen of Hanover upon the death of his father, Ernest Augustus I of Hanover, on November 18, 1851

Later life

Queen Marie died, some twenty-eight years after her husband, on January 9, 1907, at Gmunden, Austria, where she was later buried.
