Mario Hoops 3-on-3 (also known as Mario Basketball 3-on-3 in Japan) is a basketball game developed by Square Enix for the Nintendo DS. It was first completely unveiled at the E3 2006 showcase.
In the beginning, it was meant to be an original intellectual property, but Square Enix felt that it would work well if it were a part of the Mario franchise, and so Square Enix contacted Nintendo, who then allowed them to use the Mario label. This game also is the first in which Mario and Final Fantasy characters appear together.
This game was originally known as Mario Basket 3-on-3
Gameplay
Touch control is used for all actions except for movement, which is handled by the directional pad. It was once believed that the touch screen was used for dribbling, but it was recently revealed that dribbling was automatic, and touching the screen in a certain direction would cause the character that they are controlling to face in that direction, allowing them to turn without having to move with the d-pad and would give the player better defense.
