Mark Greenway

Encyclopedia : M : MA : MAR : Mark Greenway

Mark "Barney" Greenway, born 1969 in Kettering, is a British death metal vocalist, who has been a member of Napalm Death, Extreme Noise Terror and Benediction. He is best known for his 'deep' death grunt and his lively stage act. His vocal inspiration comes from Kam Lee, of the band Mantas, which later became Death. He is also known as being a supporter for PETA and has been a vegetarian since he was 14. He has also expressed anti-Conservative and anti-National Socialist views and is a strong supporter of democracy.

While out of Napalm Death, during 1998, Greenway started a band called 'Nothing but Comtempt' with Cancer's drummer Carl Stokes. After Stokes left N.B.C. Danny Herrera was the band's skinsman. Nevertheless, Greenway returned to Napalm Death and Nothing but Contempt was put on hold.

Greenway has stated his nickname "Barney" comes a time when he used to drink alcohol. He stated he would get so drunk and if he went anywhere, he would bump into everything. From this behaviour, he would be called "Rubble", which changed to "Barney Rubble" and then just "Barney". [link]

Greenway is a big progressive metal fan. He joined Dream Theater on stage at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club and performed vocals on Metallica's Damage Inc. He is a regular contributor of the British rock magazine Kerrang! as a reviewer of prog metal bands/albums.
