Marriage crunch

Encyclopedia : M : MA : MAR : Marriage crunch

The Marriage Crunch was a term popularly coined by Newsweek in a 1986 article outlining the likelihood of a woman over the age of 30 getting married. The article was controversial (even before September 11, 2001) because it stated such a woman would have a better chance of being killed in a terrorist attack than marrying. This statement was not substatiated by the relatively unscientific study contained in the article.

Research

Research was done on 14 women. As a result of the research it was stated that women had a 20% chance of getting married over the age of 30. It drops to 5% after the age of 35.

Historical Impact

In the 1980s, therapists saw a larger number of patients citing the marriage crunch in their sessions. It became a pervasive issue among many women in society.

Things have changed in today's society.
