Martel College

Encyclopedia : M : MA : MAR : Martel College

Martel College is one of the nine residential colleges at Rice University in Houston, Texas. Martel College is named after Speros Martel, a benefactor of Rice University. For this reason Martel's crest contains elements of the Greek flag combined with an owl, the mascot of Rice University, and the initials of Martel College.

The college buildings

The college buildings were designed by Michael Graves. Ground-breaking began in 2000, and the Martel College founding committee was formed, consisting of two members of each of the eight previous colleges of Rice University. After reviewing applications, 63 freshmen were able to transfer from their existing residential colleges to the newly opened Martel College.

Martel College is known for winning the first ever Men's Beer Run in 2003, which took place when the annual Beer Bike was cancelled due to inclement weather. Martel College has also created its own traditions ranging from mud soccer during torrential downpours, to an event known as Maptek during O-week, to a massive holiday decorating contest in which the four floors of Martel try to best each other's holiday decorations. Martel is also the only college with a sally port.

Intercollege rivalry

Rivalries are common among the residential colleges at Rice University and even before its opening, Martel was no exception. Though now composed entirely of fully matriculated martelians (members of the college), jokes such as modifications to the wikipedia entry for Martel College are still commonly refer to Martel's relative youth (see example below).

'Martel is the newest of Rice University's residental colleges and is still defining itself within the residential college system (JIBA). In its earliest years, Martel suffered from the stigma of being the newest college without a developed sense of tradition, identity or history. The first true freshman class did not matriculate until the fall semester of 2002, prior to which all residents had been transfers from other colleges, giving rise to the still-current anti-cheer "Martel is not a college!" Due to the fact that a disproportionate number of these transfers had departed from Will Rice College, Martel was also given the nickname of "Will Rice's penal colony." '
