The Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) is an art school in Baltimore, MD. It was founded in 1826, making it the oldest accredited art college in the United States. The school is located in the Bolton Hill neighborhood, about 1.5 miles (2 km) from downtown Baltimore. Its campus consists of about half a dozen buildings catering to different art departments. The campus is close to the Baltimore Light Rail's University of Baltimore/Mount Royal station.
Campus
Mica boasts many notable buildings. The newest addition to the campus is the recently completed Brown Center. Finished in 2004, the building is notable for its highly unusual design - its exterior walls are constructed of steel with glass panes. Also of note is the Meyerhoff House which now serves as the dining facility and student residence. It is a renovated women's hospital. The Commons is the residential building for incoming freshmen. The Mt. Royal Station Building was a functioning railroad train stop originally built in 1896 which was acquired and re-made into classrooms and artist studios. It houses the fibers, sculpture department, classrooms for foundation level 3D arts classes, studios for senior 3D majors, and the Rinehart School of Sculpture (masters in fine arts program).
Other buildings making up the campus are the Bank Building, the Fox Building, the Bunting Center, the Dolphin Building, and the Main Building.
