The name of the city is assumed to have its origins in a belief of local inhabitants calling the ruins of an Achaemenid palace as the Masjed-e-Soleiman, which means "Mosque of Solomon."
The current secretary of Iran's powerful Expediency Discernment Council, Mohsen Rezaee is from here. The first oil drilling in the Middle East has been made in the region of Naftoon in the center of this city, so the 100th year aniversary for the oil drilling in the Middle East will be celebrated in 2008 in this city. also called Masjed Soleiman in brief M.I.S.
