Master of Theological Studies
Encyclopedia : M : MA : MAS : Master of Theological Studies
In Western Christian theology, a Master of Theological Studies (MTS) is a two-year graduate degree offered by many theological schools. The degree is generally equivalent to a Master of Arts degree in religious studies. Unlike the Master of Divinity, the Master of Theological Studies is an academic degree, and its goal is not to prepare one for ordination. As such, it does not necessarily include field education or coursework in ministry studies. It usually requires the completion of a scholarly thesis. The Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada accredits many such programs.
Schools offering the MTS degree include:
- Duke Divinity School, Duke University
- Harvard Divinity School, Harvard University
- Vanderbilt Divinity School, Vanderbilt University
- College of Arts and Letters, University of Notre Dame
- Candler School of Theology, Emory University
- Boston University School of Theology, Boston University
