Masurian (also known as Mazurian, Masovian, and Mazovian) is a dialect of Polish from Masovia and Masuria. After the partition of Poland, save for the interlude of the Napoleonic Wars, Masovia had been part of the Russian Empire while Masuria was part of Prussia. Both populations were sujected to efforts to change to the language if the ruling power, with the process of Germanization being more successful than that of Russification for a number of reasons, including the local population having been subjected to it for a longer period of time.
Mazur is one of the five major dialects of the Polish language. Its variations are spoken in the countryside of northern Masovia and until about 1950 were commonly spoken in Masuria.
