Mataró (Latin Iluro) is the capital of the comarca of Maresme, in the province of Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. It is located by the Mediterranean Sea. Population 116,764 (2005).
Mataró dates back to Roman times when it was a village known as "Iluro". The ruins of a Roman bath house were recently discovered and can be visited. The coastal NII (N2) highway follows the same path as the original Roman road.
Mataró was declared a city by royal decree, even though at the time (19th century) the population fell short of the requirement for city status.
The first railway in Spain was the Barcelona - Mataró line which opened on 28 October 1848, led by the Catalan businessman Miquel Biada, born in Mataró.
