Mattapoisett is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 6,268 at the 2000 census.

History
Mattapoisett was first settled in 1750 and was officially incorporated in 1857.Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 60.4 km² (23.3 mi²). 42.7 km² (16.5 mi²) of it is land and 17.7 km² (6.8 mi²) of it (29.36%) is water.Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there were 6,268 people, 2,532 households, and 1,769 families residing in the town. The population density was 146.9/km² (380.4/mi²). There were 3,172 housing units at an average density of 74.3/km² (192.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 96.51% White, 0.62% African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.65% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.10% from other races, and 0.96% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.57% of the population.There were 2,532 households out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.7% were married couples living together, 9.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.1% were non-families. 25.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the town the population was spread out with 23.9% under the age of 18, 4.5% from 18 to 24, 26.0% from 25 to 44, 29.0% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 92.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.9 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $58,466, and the median income for a family was $68,246. Males had a median income of $48,100 versus $35,938 for females. The per capita income for the town was $28,050. About 2.8% of families and 3.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.5% of those under age 18 and 3.2% of those age 65 or over.

Mattapoisett is part of a tri-town area, sharing the same schools and phone book with two other towns, Marion, Massachusetts and Rochester, Massachusetts.
